Week 1: Character

The main character of this book is very different from any character I have read about before. This character seems to have no purpose and doesn’t care about anything. The only thing I have seen him care about so far is girls. The only time I have seen him show effort in any task is when he finds the funeral of “the girl who’d sleep with anyone” and to find “the ear girl” again, and although he doesn’t seem concerned when his ex-wife is at his house, he later obsesses about finding a slip of hers. I also think that the author’s use of “the girl who’d sleep with anyone” and “the ear girl” as prophets is intriguing. Surprisingly, I find this character very relatable. I think that the author might be trying to make a point about how people are becoming increasingly apathetic and instead of doing “work we believed in”. He never mentions anything of family, besides his ex-wife, and he is now distant from his business partner, which leads me to believe that they do not influence him. I think the sheep chase will be the turning point for this character where he will find a form of purpose. This book has captured my attention and I can’t wait to read more.

  1. You have a good point about the main character being different from any character I've seen before. It seems like most stories involve a very excited, determined main character. That may give people something to strive for? However, this character seems almost more relatable for most people. Everything has experienced a feeling of uncertainty and bored, which just happens to be daily life for the main character.

  2. I agree, that I have never seen a book character like this before. I have meet people like this before though and somehow, they were so boring that their character was interesting. I think this book offers a similar scenario...this man is so ordinary that you pity him and expect him to finally discover his true personality. You are just waiting for that moment when he will finally discover his true meaning in life.

  3. It really makes me wonder why an author would think up such a character. Then again, in every movie we see there are average characters. Things happen to them that could happen to us. So, what makes it so significant that someone choses to write about someone like that? I'm not really sure, but it works.
