Character. Week 1.

The main character of this book is almost a blur to me. He seems like he lacks passion for life. His job is a bore, and he has no motivation whatsoever. I feel bad for him in a sense… his wife just left him- probably for his newly taken boring lifestyle- and she left nothing behind for him. (No, not even a slip.) Not to mention the part of his personality where he takes an obsession with an average girl's "holy" ears. I really want to be creeped out by his obsession, but I also find it mildly sweet.
This nameless man is taken aback that this girl he’s taken out to dinner is actually interested in his life. I think that something told him for so long he wasn’t going to do anything in his lifetime, and that nothing was going to change. Because of this, he can’t help but have that drilled into his mind. Poor guy.

I have the feeling that this sheep chase, known to him seconds before thanks to his girlfriend, is going to really change how he sees life and himself. He's going to see that he really isn't a boring guy, and his uniqueness will define him all the more.

  1. I agree with your comment that he seems to have a boring lifestyle just drilled into his mind as the way things are going to be. He seems like a very interesting and creative man, but his true personality is confined within the walls of his mind.

  2. I wonder what the obsession with the ears is supposed to mean. It's not just inside his head because she too is aware of the perfection of the ears. Maybe it's symbolic of the way we all hide the really special and perfect things about ourselves because without them we can be unremarkable and safe.

  3. I agree that his obsession with the girl's ears was a little creepy. But, I think the reason I didn't think too much about it after a little while is because it was one of the few times you see him care about something. I hope that we get to see more of her unlike the girl in the first girl who died.

  4. I think that the way he obsesses over the ears shows his ability to recognize small but unique things. But this could also be a weakness of his. Since he's so drawn in by this tiny detail, he may eventually lose sight of the big picture. Perhaps this could be compared to how he lives life in general? Who knows...

  5. I actually thought a lot about his obsession with the "ear girl"'s ears. I can't imagine being so obsessed with ears. Athena has a good point that the ears are likely symbolic of something? I'm not sure, hopefully we'll find out more later.
