week 1: character
The main character in this book is very interesting. He describes himself as a very boring person, but it seems to me that he is just using that as an excuse to be depressed and lazy. He acts as though his body is on earth, but his mind is continually wandering off to other places. He seems very mentally caught up in his past relationship and he is having trouble moving on. Though he may initially come off as mundane, there is a glimmer of creativity in him that keeps his character very intriguing and I think that once he can move on with his life he will finally be able to harness his talents and live life to its fullest. Just the fact that he has a head-over-heels obsession with a woman’s ears shows that he has a very unique mind and a thriving passion for certain things in life. I hope that he will eventually figure out what he truly loves (other than women) and become successful because he has the potential, just not the drive. Now that “the wild sheep chase” is finally beginning, the plot could take us down some interesting paths of character development. I find it funny that even though the main character is so “boring”, his life story is so intriguing. This man has potential…I just hope it will be unleashed.

What if he didn't have potential though? What if he were just really, incredibly, unapologetically boring? It's expected that a character in a book would have some element in their life that makes them interesting, but what about a truly average person? What's their purpose?
ReplyDeleteI hope that this book could tell us what the average person's purpose is. I also think that maybe the "glimmer of creativity" might just be part of a person he used to be or a person he wants to becaome. Maybe this labeling himself as ordinary is simply him being self-concious about his actual personality.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point Athena...maybe he is just a completely ordinary man. As the reader, the character seems boring and relatable, so we pity him, and maybe that is what makes this book so intriguing. The realism and the connection the reader can feel with the character make this book engagingly interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emily--it'd be great to know the purpose of an average person. Or even how they find a purpose...if they end up having one. This whole sheep mystery could lead to the discovery of some trait he never knew he had...
ReplyDeleteI think that this idea of his uniquness covered up by what he believes his life to be is very intriguing. It could possibly be the purpose of the book. Boring man goes on an adventure and becomes the new man. It could definately happen. I just read up on Olivia's comment and that kind of made me wonder... how cool would that be if he ended up having superpowers? Just a thought. :)
ReplyDeleteI think Reed is giving him too much credit. Maybe his ear fetish is because he is a weird creeper that cares about ears more than the person who has those ears. Also I disagree that his life is intriguing because I think it is really boring.
